In last few year, cotton sowing area has been decreased rapidly due to different reasons. There were many factors due to which the growers switched to other crops. The top most issue was the weather. Heavy rains affected crop. the weather changes in the month of September put the yield down.
The farmers switched to other crops like Sugarcane, Mung, Maize, Rice and some other crops. The situation was tragic when the world famous cotton belt Vehari district cotton growers adopted the above mentioned crops. This move affected the rates of those crops due to over supply. The prices of sugarcane and Maize crashed in the year 2016-17.
To get back the farmers back to cotton, the govt of Punjab is making efforts. The best among all the efforts is competition announcement among cotton growers. The secretary agriculture Muhammad Mehmood announced award scheme among top yield growers. This scheme has been announced first time in Pakistan history.
The secretory agriculture told that the competition would be made in 19 cotton growing districts of Punjab. Total amount of 14 millions rupees will be spent on different awards in it. He further told that through this scheme the per acre yield of farmers would be boosted and hence would increase our national yield.
The participating farmers should have a plot of 5 acres at least. The province level winners will get laser land leveler, tractor trolley and disc harrow successively. The district level winners will get cotton planter, rotavator and boom sprayer successively.
This scheme will certainly motivate cotton growers to work hard to get a prize. So the yield of growers may be increased which will affect of national cotton production figures. The loss in yield in last couple of years suffered the industry which led to import cotton from international market in a huge amount. The foreign reservoirs were spent a lot on cotton import in an agriculture country.
